What is a monocyte?

Understanding your results
High monocytes (monocytosis)
Monocytosis means a count above 1.0 ×10⁹/L. In the vast majority of cases it is reactive — a normal body response — and benign. The most common causes:34
- a recovery phase: monocytes often rise as you recover from an acute infection, or when the marrow rebounds after a drop in neutrophils (neutropenia);
- a chronic infection: tuberculosis, endocarditis (a heart-valve infection), brucellosis, some parasitic or fungal infections;

When should you worry? An isolated, transient monocytosis found during an infection or on a routine check is usually harmless. The point of attention is persistent monocytosis: a count > 1.0 ×10⁹/L making up > 10% of white cells that lasts for months, especially after age 60. That pattern should prompt evaluation for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), a marrow disorder that overlaps myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative syndromes. Low monocytes (monocytopenia)
