What is serum osmolality?
Osmolality measures the concentration of all dissolved particles (solutes) in a fluid. In blood, those particles are mostly sodium and its associated salts, along with glucose, urea (BUN), and smaller amounts of potassium and other molecules. The more particles there are relative to water, the higher the osmolality.1

High osmolality (hyperosmolality)
A high osmolality means the blood is too concentrated with solutes relative to water. The main causes:43
