HBsAg positive: a current infection

A positive HBsAg means the virus is present in your blood. Two situations:

  • if the antigen appeared recently (often with IgM anti-HBc), this is acute hepatitis B. In adults it clears on its own in the great majority of cases: HBsAg disappears and anti-HBs appears (recovery with immunity);5
  • if HBsAg persists beyond 6 months, it's chronic hepatitis B. The virus stays present, but that does not mean the liver is necessarily damaged: many people are inactive carriers and feel well.
